Catherine Heywood is a Senior Automation Lead at Invitae. In her previous roles, she was a Lead Automation Specialist at the Pandemic Response Lab and a Senior Application Scientist at the New York Genome Center. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Individualized Genomics and Personalized Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
Catherine is a data-driven application scientist and automation engineer with a passion for streamlining processes and designing automation methods to maximize laboratory efficiency. She regularly conducts large scale cost-benefit analyses for major lab purchasing decisions and is a go-to resource for troubleshooting lab protocols and methods, all while maintaining vendor relationships. She specializes in liquid handling, primarily on large liquid handling platforms (e.g., Hamilton STAR, Tecan Fluent), leading in project design and methodology, development, and implementation.
For several years Catherine has advocated for and led efforts to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the STEM space, including moderating career panels, identifying bias and inequity in recruitment and retention processes, and working with senior leadership to respond to critical issues related to systemic inequality.
